I love Christmas time and after saying I don’t like spending it anywhere but home (see post), I decided to have a cheeky Christmas filled get away to Prague to experience it the Czech way.
Booked through Holiday Pirates at a bargain of a price I jetted off for a 2 night Christmas market extravaganza with a friend. I must confess I absolutely love markets; I will visit at least one market in any country I visit so combine this with Christmas then we are onto a winner!
I arrived on St. Nicholas’ Night – Dec 5th where in the evening St. Nicholas (Mikulas in Czech) and his two sidekicks – a devil and an angel are seen roaming the streets. There was much merriment on the streets and loads of families milling about. It truly added to the atmosphere to see everyone so happy.
I got to see three Christmas markets in total whilst trying the delicious Czech delicacy of Trdelnik with mulled wine, which was very much needed as it was super cold!
Here are some of the gorgeous markets we got to see:
- Namesti Republiky – against the backdrop of the Church of St. Ludmila
2. Wenceslas Square – found in the centre of Prague’s commercial district
3. Old Town Square – full of architectural delights!
Although I engorged on a lot of food during my days here a lot of walking was done to burn off the calories! Up towers such as…..
The Old Town Hall
The Church of Our Lady before Tyn or what I like to call The Disney Church (a ‘WOW’ escaped out mouths as we turned the corner and saw this beautiful church)
Petrin Tower to see beautiful Prague city at night

Across bridges like the beautiful medieval St. Charles Bridge flanked by seven sculptures on it and amazing views
Up walkways to gaze upon (and in) St. Nicholas Church
‘Czeching’ out the guards outside Prague Castle…
We covered a lot of ground in our short time there but still with some spontaneity – the way I like it!
Christmas time in Prague was truly magical and I often felt I was in a Disney movie! It was my first time visiting Christmas markets abroad and I would be happy to try it again next year – just depends where!
Any suggestions?
Merry Christmas everyone!
