Video Diaries: The Streets of Salvador

September 15, 2017

It’s been a whole year since I was last in Brazil and I spent last month reminiscing and wishing I was back in that special place, enjoying the sun and vibrancy of that beautiful land. First IG post of 2019 and its my #bestofnine2018 (yea yea I’m late to the game) I’m also flashing back to my 2018 travels with my usual Travels in Review up on my blog (link in bio). Most people do this sort of post to end 2018 but I’m not most people and I just wanted to chill over the festive period & my birthday month (Jan) So I’m doing mine now in good ol’ Jan 2019 because I’m like you gotta look back to move forward! Check out what were the 9 countries I visited in 2018 (one of which was not preplanned) This year my travels will take an entirely different pace but thats for another day/blogpost. What have you guys got planned for your 2019 travels? I had my #Wanderlist for this year and its almost entirely been thrown away! . . . . . . . . . . #the5to9traveller #travelsinreview #placesivebeen #2018travels #igoplaces #blacktravelblogger #blacktravelfeed #mytraveldiary #cornersofmyworld #theworldismycanvas #nomadic #adventureismysidehustle #blacktravelmovement #mytravelpics #adventureislife #blkcreatives #issavibe #travelnoire
Yesterday I went Christmas Tree Hunting for a second year. This beauty, sponsored by @fortnums, I captured at Somerset House @somersethouse , where I also spotted a celeb spending time with his family (check out my IG stories to find out who) All in all this activity got me completely Chrismassy now so roll on family time, pressies & food. . I’ll be back in the new year with my posts on Cape Town but I would like to take this time to wish you all a Merry Christmas & a happy New Year and to say thank you for your comments and interactions. I really do appreciate it and it makes me continue to want to share my adventures with ya. Here is to a glorious 2019 full of more adventures for us all xxx . . . . . . . . . . . . #the5to9traveller #merrychristmashappynewyear #somersethouse #christmastreehunting #thisislondon #mylondon #londonatnight #christmasinLondon #iceskating #mytraveldiary #cornersofmyworld #seekthesimplicity #christmastree🎄 #londonthroughmycam #holidayseason #pursuepretty #prettylittlelondon #prettycitylondon #feelfreefeed #mytinyatlaslondon
‘Most people write me off when they see me. They do not know my story. They say I am just an African. They judge me before they get to know me. What they do not know is The pride I have in the blood that runs through my veins; The pride I have in my rich culture and the history of my people; The pride I have in my strong family ties and the deep connection to my community; The pride I have in the African music, African art, and African dance; The pride I have in my name and the meaning behind it. Just as my name has meaning, I too will live my life with meaning. I will raise my head high wherever I go Because of my African pride, And nobody will take that away from me.’ Words by Idowu Koyenikan Sculpture by @hanneliecoetzee . Unveiled this year on Woman’s Day, this African beauty was just chilling on the side of a building in Joburg’s Braamfontein district to give honour to the women of Jozi (Jo’burg’s nickname) and their spirit. . This has to be the best street art find in Jo’burg, its just magnificent and I love the glory it gives African women. A lot of people give Jo’burg a skip in favour of seaside resorty Cape Town but you really shouldn’t; its such a vibing gem. Go, see & learn. . . . . . . . . . . . . #the5to9traveller #africanqueen #streetartphoto #joburg #visitsouthafrica #womensday #igerssouthafrica #queening #blacktravelfeed #artsagram #sculptureart #checkoutafrica #poetsofig #streetartglobe #braamfontein #blkcreatives #africangirlskillingit #mytraveldiary #cornersofmyworld #melanintravel
‘Home is where a story begins and is the starting place of love, hope and dreams’ . I stand in front of Nelson Mandela’s house, not palatial by any means but gosh what a legend it housed. My friend who had been before tried to talk me out of visiting saying its just a small house nothing fancy, ten minutes of my time but to me it wasn’t really about you know ticking off a ‘to-do’ list, it was to see the home that housed a freedom fighter that thought of others above himself. I needed to see the home of Madiba, to see his first home and see that it does not limit you where you begin. Madiba, after being released wanted to move back here but due to so many visitors and publicity he was unable to stay here and moved to Houghton Estate instead. . #TravelTipTuesday: There is a discount entry for those of the African Union. The one time being a Nigerian passport 🇳🇬holder gave me a discount! 🙌🏾 . Fun fact: Vilakazi Street is home to two Nobel Peace Prize Winners. Can you guess who they are? . . . . . . . . . . . . #the5to9traveller #visitsouthafrica #madiba #nelsonmandela #vilakazistreet #soweto #blackgirlstraveltoo #travelwithpassion #southafricaza #discoversouthafrica #mytraveldiary #learnfromtheworld #travelinladies #longwalktofreedom #blkcreatives #femaletravelbloggers #igerssouthafrica #checkoutafrica #cornersofmyworld #blacktraveljourney
An excellent day trip from Jo’burg is to the World Heritage site of the Cradle of Humankind which consists of a guided tour of the Sterkfontein caves & the Maropeng interactive Visitor centre. We explored and learnt about the discovery of the caves and fossils of Mrs. Ples (the one of the most complete skulls ever found of a pre-human) and other remains by Robert Broom whose bronze bust I’m rubbing for wisdom. It really was a fascinating day; the visitor centre is a child’s (or in my case a kidult’s) dream full of interactive learning activities and an indoor boat ride. Would definitely recommend it for a day trip, especially the cave exploring when you have to scramble through nooks and crannies hence my bewildered sweaty wild look in the penultimate photo 😂 . Extra tip: entry is R195 (discount for kids) therefore don’t bother using a tour company who will hike up the price extensively (we almost paid R1300 😱), best bet hire a car it will be significantly cheaper. Unfortunately there is no public transport to get there. You could get an Uber going but no guarantee you could secure one back to Jo’burg. . . . . . . . . #the5to9traveller #travelthursday #ilovesouthafrica #cradleofhumankind #worldheritagesite #cavehunting #maropeng #sterkfonteincaves #southafricaza #blackgirlstraveltoo #igerssouthafrica #checkoutafrica #joburg #visitsouthafrica #travelandlearn #discoversouthafrica #girlsthatwander #blackgirltravel #mytraveldiary #travelafrica
I stand in front of the doors of the supreme Constitutional Courts of Jo’burg which has engraved in it the 27 rights of the Bill of Rights carved in the languages of South Africa & also in sign language. The courts sit on Constitution Hill and open up onto Constitution Square and form part of the old prison complex created on the hill initially in 1893 (with additions years later) . So why build legal courts on an area that harboured so much pain where black prisoners even in prison where treated differently from white prisoners. Where famous political figures like Gandhi, Luthuli and Mandela were imprisoned. It was deliberately chosen though for the very reason of this history, so it stares the justice system in the face of the darker times of injustice. South Africa has been through so much and still has a long way to go (which country doesn’t) but its a land that I admire greatly despite it all. . Its a large complex but give yourself plenty of time to go around and take it in. . . . . . . . . . . . #the5to9traveller #visitsouthafrica #joburg #constitutionhill #constutioncourts #historicalplaces #everydayafrica #travelnoire #travelisthenewclub #girlvsglobe #travelinladies #mytraveldiary #travelandlearn #prison #thisisafrica #southafrica🇿🇦 #igerssouthafrica #blackgirlstraveltoo #learnfromtheworld #africanfabric
